Timber smugglers attack forest department official with axes and knives in Shopian

SRINAGAR

A Forest department official was brutally assaulted by a group of timber smugglers in a village of south Kashmir’s Shopian district on Wednesday night.

According to the police, Block Forest Officer Mohammad Abdullah Bhat sustained grievous injuries after he was attacked with axes and knives by a gang of timber smugglers in Nasserpora village of the district at around 11.45 pm.

He said that Bhat came under attack when he along with other forest officials tried to seize the timber-laden horses of the smugglers.

“The smugglers armed with axes and knives outnumbered the forest officials,” the official added.

Bhat, who was grievously injured in the assault and is undergoing treatment at Srinagar’s SMHS hospital, the official said, adding that a case has been registered and a manhunt launched to nab the assailants.
