The Jammu and Kashmir Police Tuesday arrested a woman for allegedly smuggling explosives and ammunition, a police officer said.
The police had set up a mobile check post at Lawaypora on the outskirts of the city following inputs about militants trying to smuggle arms into the city, the officer said.
“Today evening upon receipt of reliable information that some OGW is coming from Baramulla towards Srinagar with ammunition, a naka was laid opposite Kirmaniabad shrine near Lawaypora,” the official said.
Several hand grenades and a large number of live rounds were recovered from the woman’s bag during the checking of the vehicle in which she was travelling.
“In the meantime, a Golden colored Chevrolet Tavera car (JK01M-0056) was stopped for checking. Aboard it was a woman. She was searched by lady police personnel present at the naka who recovered 20 grenades along with a large cache of ammunition from the woman’s bag during search,” he said.
The official said the ammo and explosives along with the vehicle has been seized and the the woman has taken to a women’s police station for questioning.
Police have not revealed the identity of the woman as she was being questioned.
