Social media remained abuzz today after dynamic IPS officer Basant Rath was transferred as Jammu and Kashmir Traffic police chief.

The Jammu and Kashmir government on Tuesday appointed Alok Kumar as new Inspector General of Police, Traffic, replacing Basant Rath.

“Alok Kumar, IPS (JK-1997), IGP Security, J&K is transferred and posted as IGP, Traffic, J&K vice Basant Kumar Rath. Basant Kumar Rath, IPS (JK-2000), IGP Traffic J&K is transferred and attached in the office of commandant General Home Guards/Civil Defence/SDRF till further orders,” an official order said.

Social media users remained abuzz with the news of Rath’s transfer with former JK police chief S P Vaid hailing the unorthodox yet controversial police officer’s honesty.

“Social media agog with rumours of transfer of Basant Rath @KangriCarrier IGP Traffic; I hope it isn’t true. He may follow unorthodox ways, but his honesty and dynamism is appreciable & commendable,” Vaid tweeted.

Former minister and senior PDP leader lashed out at Governor Malik-led JK government over Rath’s transfer, dubbing it as a “punishment”.

“Governor administration shows itself in very poor light by transferring Basant Rath @KangriCarrier in a manner that makes it look like a punishment. The reason is not far to seek if the public sentiment and general comments are an indicator. We live in insecure times.” Akhtar wrote on Twitter.

“Those talking Good Governance & Accountability have reportedly removed IGP traffic Basant Rath,” MLA Langate Engineer Rasheed wrote on Facebook.

“He has been victimised for being honest, secular & dedicated. Those who took to streets against him in Jammu have achieved nothing except exposing BJP’s vote bank politics & narrow thinking.”

Rath made headlines last week after he lashed out at newly elected Srinagar Mayor Junaid Azim Mattu on Twitter, telling him traffic management was not his domain.
