A special police officer (SPO) was killed and a constable injured on Tuesday in a militant attack in Kashmir’s Anantnag district, police said.
Militants fired at a police vehicle in Bijbehara area of Anantnag district in south Kashmir, the police said.
Head Constable Abdul Rashid and SPO Bilal Ahmad had received injuries in the attack.
“Both were shifted to hospital where doctors declared the SPO dead on arrival. The Head Constable has been shifted to Srinagar for specialized treatment,” the police said.
Later in the day, a wreath laying ceremony was held for the slain cop at District Police Lines Anantnag.
“DIG SKR Amit Kumar led the Police and Civil officers and officials in laying the floral tributes on the mortal remains of the killed policeman,” said a spokesman.
“SSP Anantnag Altaf Ahmad Khan, DC Anantnag Mohd Younis, SP HQRS Anantnag Tahir Ashraf, senior Army/CRPF officers and jawans were among the others who laid floral wreaths on the mortal remains of the martyr.”
The slain cop, a native of Gani gund village in Verinag, is survived by a young sister, elderly parents and a grandmother.
