Police and paramilitary forces allegedly set ablaze handcarts of fruit vendors during violent stone-pelting clashes in Soura area on the outskirts of Srinagar city on Wednesday.
Residents alleged that police torched vendors’ carts in an “act of vengeance”, however, a police spokesperson said some “miscreants” set ablaze carts of vendors and also damaged some tree guards and road dividers after they failed to enforce a separatist-called shutdown in the area.
“In spite of today’s hartal call given by separatists Some fruit vendors were conducting their normal business near Maternity Hospital Soura and traffic was partially plying . However, infuriated by this some miscreants assembled near Sabzi Mandi Soura and started pelting stones on vehicles plying on the roads,” the spokesperson said.
He said that police and security forces, keeping in view the rush of patients near the hospital, exercised maximum restraint and avoided the confrontation with mob of stone-pelters.
“This infuriated and frustrated the mob of miscreants and they tried hard to engage security forces and escalate the situation.”
“Finally, during evening hours at the time of withdrawal of SFs, the miscreants to seek the attention of security forces and engage them set ablaze a few fruit carts which they dragged on road. Also some tree guards and road dividers were damaged,” he said.
“However, the miscreants were dispersed with minimum force and in this regard case FIR No: 80 under relevant provisions of law has been registered in Police Station Soura and investigations taken up,” the spokesperson added.
